General Motors is temporarily laying off 200 workers at its Factory Zero assembly plant in Detroit due to market adjustments. The plant, which employs approximately 4,537 workers, is the first fully dedicated all-electric facility and has received over $2.5bn in investment. According to GM, the layoffs are not related to recent auto tariffs but are necessary to “align with market dynamics.” The factory produces several Ultium-based vehicles, including the GMC Hummer EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV WT. In response to changing consumer demand, GM has also revised its EV production targets for 2024, reducing its output from 300,000 units to 250,000 units. CEO Mary Barra indicated that the company is pushing back the Orion Assembly EV truck plant’s timeline to mid-2026 and plans to introduce plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2027.
