THE HR BREAKDOWN

Nevada to use Google AI to process a backlog of unemployment cases

Nevada has enlisted Google AI to address its backlog of unemployment claims, using a cloud-based model to analyze appeals hearing transcripts and suggest rulings. Carl Stanfield, the IT administrator of the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), noted: “The time saving is pretty phenomenal,” as the artificial intelligence (AI) platform can process cases in five minutes compared to three hours for human workers. With over 10,000 unprocessed appeals, the technology aims to expedite the review process. However, concerns arise regarding the potential pressure on employees to accept AI recommendations without thorough scrutiny. Michele Evermore, a former deputy director for unemployment modernization policy, expressed worries about the implications of relying heavily on algorithms. A governance committee will oversee the AI’s performance to mitigate risks of bias and errors, because mistakes could significantly impact claimants’ rights.
