10,000 U.S. hotel workers strike over long holiday weekend

Around 10,000 hotel workers across eight U.S. cities have gone on strike, demanding improved pay and working conditions. The strike, which was called by the UNITE HERE union ahead of Labour Day, follows unsuccessful contract negotiations with major hotel chains including Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott. Gwen Mills, International President of UNITE HERE, said: “Too many hotels still haven’t restored standard services that guests deserve, like automatic daily housekeeping and room service.” The union has also authorized strikes in additional cities, indicating a growing unrest among hotel workers. Michael D’Angelo, head of U.S. labor relations at Hyatt, expressed disappointment over the strike decision but emphasised the company’s commitment to negotiating fair contracts.
