According to a study published in JAMA Network Open, Black Americans are experiencing significantly higher rates of drug overdoses compared to their white counterparts. The research, led by Kechna Cadet from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, indicates that the overdose death rate for Black men surpassed that of white men in 2016 and was nearly 60% higher by 2020. Black women also saw a rise in overdose deaths, exceeding those of white women by 2019. Cadet emphasised the need for targeted interventions, saying: “Efforts to reduce drug-related mortality must address the specific needs of marginalized communities, especially Black men.” The study analysed data from nearly 519,000 fatal drug overdoses reported to the CDC between 2010 and 2020, revealing alarming increases in states like Maryland, where Black men faced a 485% rise in overdose deaths from 2015 to 2020.
