Amazon is set to cease operations in Quebec, resulting in approximately 1,700 full-time job losses. The company will close seven sites in the province, which is notable for being the only location in Canada with unionized Amazon employees. Amazon spokesperson Barbara Agrait said: “Following a recent review of our Quebec operations, we’ve seen that returning to a third-party delivery model . . . will allow us to provide even more savings to our customers.” Affected employees will receive a compensation package that includes up to 14 weeks’ pay and transitional benefits. The Canadian labor union Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) has condemned the move, observing that it targets the only unionized warehouse in Canada and contradicts the Quebec Labour Code. CSN president Caroline Senneville said the closures are part of an anti-union campaign against Amazon employees.
