Boeing’s agreement to plead guilty to fraud following two fatal crashes of its 737 MAX jets has been rejected by U.S. federal judge Reed C O’Connor. The judge raised concerns over a diversity and inclusion provision in the deal, which required consideration of race in selecting an independent monitor to oversee Boeing’s compliance. O’Connor said: “In a case of this magnitude, it is in the utmost interest of justice that the public is confident this monitor selection is done based solely on competency.” Boeing and the U.S. justice department now have 30 days to update the court on their next steps.
